Follow me as I explore Ecuadorian culture during my study abroad experience this spring semester of 2010. I will be attending the University of San Francisco in Cumbaya, living in Quito, and doing a service-learning component with IPSL (International Partnership for Service-Learning). Hopefully I will find some gypsies! (Hence the title, gitana means gypsy)
Cool thing about Mitad del Mundo is that the site is there. In Ecuador I remember probably passing over the equator dozens of times, but the only times it really seemed special were when I was at Mitad del Mundo. Some places are sacred because we make them so. Some truly are. I think the locations of a few of the churches, especially La Compania, are sacred sites. Some of the Incan ruins down around Cuenca are as well. Mitad del Mundo, I am not sure, but it is cool.
